WALKING THE TIGHTROPE: The tension between art and politics

Walking the Tightrope: The Tension between Art and Politics, is an Offstage Theatre production in association with Theatre Uncut. It features 12 newly-commissioned short plays by established and emerging playwrights, exploring issues of censorship, boycotting and freedom of expression in the UK arts today.

Playwrites include Caryl Churchill, April De Angelis, Ryan Craig, Tim Fountain, Hannah Khalil, Neil LaBute, Gbolahan Obisesan, Evan Placey, Mark Ravenhill and Sarah Solemani.

The plays were written in response to 3 major events of boycott and censorship in the UK theatre world that arose due to the cancellation of cultural events at the Underbelly, Barbican and the Tricycle in 2014.

"If you care about humanity, then you care about the arts. If you care about the arts,
you need to support this kind of work. In my mind, there is nothing that can't be said
or seen on the stage. I think Walking the Tightrope intends to prove that many
times over, five minutes at a time."-
Neil LaBute

“There is nothing like witnessing intelligent theatre that takes you up on a tightrope
without a safety net.”-Huffington Post
